Hits: 200

North Texas picked up its first Conference USA win of the season with a dominating win against the Old Dominion Monarchs. North Texas showed why it has the leading Scoring Defense (50.7 PPG), Field Goal Percent Defense (36.1%), Turnover Margin (+7.53), Average Turnovers per Game (20.9/game), third in Steals (9.87/game), third in block shots (3.93/game), and fourth in scoring margin (+10.7 points).

North Texas held Old Dominion under its season average of 54.4 PPG, only allowed 3 made 3-pointers (6.3/game), and forced the Monarchs to commit more turnovers than normal (15.7/game versus 23 vs NT). North Texas finished with a turnover margin of +10 on the game, above its season average.

Terriell Bradley lead all scorers with 23 points on six of 12 (50%) shooting from the floor. She dropped four 3-pointers on seven attempts (57.1%) and was seven of nine from the charity stripe. She also collected four rebounds (one offensive, three defensive) and three assists to add to her stat total on 33 minutes of action.

While no other Mean Green players hit double digits, there were solid contributions from numerous players. Brittany Smith and Lauren Holmes both added eight points, Adrianna Henderson off the bench with seven points, and Micayla Buckner with six points.

Quest For a Winning Record

North Texas currently sits at 10-5 in the 2017-18 season. There are 28 games in the regular season this year. The Mean Green need just four more wins to hit the .500 mark, a level North Texas hasn’t hit since 2005-06 under Tina Slinker where the Mean Green finished 19-9 9-6. Conference USA features some tough teams like Rice (13-2 3-0), Western Kentucky (12-4 3-0), UAB (13-2 2-0), LaTech (11-5 2-1), and UTEP (11-5 2-1). North Texas has already faced off against LaTech at Ruston (L, 61-53) and Rice at the SuperPit (L, 50-49). North Texas will face off against Rice to conclude the regular season on March 3rd.

North Texas will face off against the current top of the conference on the following dates:

  • @UAB – 1/20
  • vs. Western Kentucky – 1/26
  • vs. UTEP – 1/28
  • @ Rice – 3/3

It will be interesting to see how North Texas does against these schools and it will ultimately dictate where the Mean Green might end up in the Conference Tournament at the Star in Frisco, TX.

Full Game Stats

North Texas concludes its homestand with an afternoon game against the Charlotte 49ers. The 49ers sit just above the Mean Green in CUSA standings with a 2-1 6-10 record. Charlotte’s offense ranks 9th in points per game at 65.3 however they are 11th in scoring defense allowing 66.6 points. North Texas leads the conference in scoring defense in allowing just 50.7 points. I suspect the goal of the Mean Green defense will to try to keep the ‘9ers to under 60 points to have their best shot at winning the matchup. The North Texas defense will keep the Mean Green in the game allowing the offense to hopefully grind out another win.

Tip off is set for 3:00 PM at the SuperPit in Denton, TX with the pre-game coverage beginning at 2:45 PM on KNTU 88.1.  The game will also be available on CUSA.tv.
