Jalen Guyton Career Night Helps Lead Mean Green to Second Straight Conference Win

Hits: 215

The North Texas (3-2 2-0) offense and defense got off to a bit of a slow start but once they got their feet underneath themselves, the tide started to change. North Texas also scored in both the first and second quarter, ending a Southern Miss (2-2 0-1) stat of preventing a team from scoring in those respective quarters.

Saturday night’s win puts the Mean Green at the top Conference USA West Division and gives North Texas a huge momentum boost heading into an off week before facing off against the Runners of UTSA. The West Division is wide open with UTSA, LaTech, and North Texas competing for the top spot.

Run Defense Continues to be a Strength

Despite allowing its first opposing rusher to gain more than 100 yards in a game (Ito Smith – 102 yards), the defense still held the Golden Eagle rushing attack to under its average of 178.7 at 164 yards. The Pass Defense also seemed to hold on and allowed Southern Miss to 270 yards passing; before this game the Golden Eagles were averaging 279.7 yards per game passing. The defense gave up big plays of 45 yards (passing), 33 yards (passing), 65 yards (rushing, touchdown), 31 yards (passing), and 35 yards (passing).

Trevor Moore Continues to be a Reliable Kicking Threat

Mr. Reliable” made field goals of 48 (season long), 20, and 44 yards and continued his streak of being perfect of making all PAT kicks attempted, where he now sits at 120 out of 120.

Special teams as a whole did its job and made just one “mistake” where Jaelon Darden called for a fair catch on the NT 5-yard line. The offense rattled of a 95 yard drive with Jalen Guyton catching a Mason Fine pass for a touchdown to bring the score to 21-14 USM.
