WBB: North Texas Off to Strong Start for 2017-18 Season

Hits: 178

North Texas was picked to finish 8th in Conference USA this year and so far the Mean Green sit near the top with a solid 6-2 record. The Mean Green have four games remaining in their out of conference slate before starting off conference play at LaTech to kick off 2018. Even if the Mean Green were to finish 2-2, it would still be one of the best starts for the program in about a decade.

Newcomer Freshman Guard Lauren Holmes is second on the team in scoring averaging 10.3 points per game. Those two alone should be good for at least one CUSA Player of the Week honors at some point this season.

North Texas has only played one true away game against Indiana but are a solid team at home at 4-1. Their one sole loss in the SuperPit is to Kansas State by a point after a missed jumper at the buzzer. The Mean Green came away from the San Juan Challenge with two wins.

North Texas Rarely Outscored in Either Half

Tulsa 31 22 9 35 21 4 23 W
Indiana 28 41 -13 35 27 8 -5 L

The above table is a little misleading in that North Texas obviously loses when the other team scores more points. The point trying to be made here is except for the two losses the team has suffered, they have never lost a half in games they have won, and are generally a first half team on offense.

Tough to Play Against Defensively

North Texas is managing a turnover margin of 7.9 per game and have forced a total of 172 turnovers so far this season. The Mean Green have only allowed 376 shots to be taken from the floor with 122 shots made which translates into an allowed Field Goal percentage of 32.4%. Overall, opponents have only managed to score 48.4 points per game on the Mean Green. Going into the Indiana game, North Texas had one of the top ranked defenses in the NCAA.
