North Texas (8-10 3-5) fell this afternoon to the Rice Owls in a hotly contested double-overtime match-up.  This is the third straight game against Rice dating back to February 1, 2015 that has required at least one over-time period to determine a winner.  Today’s game was a nail biter, especially after the 2nd period.  There were five lead changes and 7 ties in the game. The Mean Green led by as much as 10 points in the 2nd period and Rice’s largest lead was 9 points in the 2nd over-time period.

Fouls were an issue in the game for North Texas. Acheil Tac (8 Points; 4 Rebounds) fouled out at the 6:00 mark in the 4th period.  Kelsey Criner (8 Points; 5 Rebounds; 5 Assists) fouled out just 30 seconds into the 1st Over-time period and Teadra Jones (2 Points; 6 Rebounds) fouled out late in the 2nd Over-time period.

Today’s Player of the Game goes to Orianna Shillow, a walk-on true Freshman, who earned her first start of her career at North Texas. Even with this being her first start ever, she showed no signs of being nervous hitting her first two 3-point attempts, including being fouled in the act of making a 3-point shot, where she also made her sole Free Throw Attempt. She was 5 of 8 (62.5%) from the floor, all of which were treys and was 1 of 1 from the stripe giving her 16 points tying for the teams best.  She also earned two Defensive Rebounds, two Steals, and just one turn-over on a solid 36 minutes of play.  Previously, she had logged just two minutes of play against Weber State on December 4th.  Of the team’s six made 3-pointers, Shillow accounted for five of the made 3-pointers; Candice accounted for the 6th 3-pointer.

Also in double digits for the team was Candice Adams (16),  Bria Frierson (12), and Kaisiney Williams (10).  Frierson was also the team’s leading rebounder with 8 total Rebounds (5 Offensive; 3 Defensive).

Terra Ellison appeared to be suited out for the game but did not play.

Next up for the Mean Green will be the Southern Miss Golden Eagles on Thursday, February 4th at 6:00 PM in Hattiesburg, MS.
