WBB Late Push not Enough to Overtake Old Dominion in Second Round of the 2016 Conference USA Tournament
North Texas (11-19) attempted a push late, but foul trouble and an Old Dominion team shooting 81% from the free throw line thwart a come-from-behind bid 55-62 ending the season for the Mean Green at Bartow Arena in Birmingham, AL. MBB North Texas Falls to Western Kentucky in the Second Round of the 2016 CUSA Tournament
North Texas (12-20) fell to the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers at Legacy Arena in Birmingham, AL by a score of 84-76. Poor shooting in the first half doomed the Mean Green as they shot just 12 of 35 (34.3%) from the floor, three of 11 (27.3%) from behind the arc, and one of seven (14.3%) from the free throw line. North Texas also lost the rebounding battle 42-24. Four Mean Green players managed to get into double digits in the game -- Eric Katenda (22), Ja'Michael Brown (14), Deckie Johnson (12), and Carrington Ward (10). WBB North Texas Defeats FAU 79-74 and Advances to Second Round of the CUSA Tournament
North Texas wins its first tournament game since the 2011-2012 Season North Texas (11-18) defeated the Florida Atlantic Owls 79-74 in a closely fought battle. The Mean Green lead for much of the game but FAU battled back in the fourth quarter however it wasn't enough to overtake a hot but evenly balanced offense that shot 48.1% (26-54) from the floor, 46.7% (7-15) from behind the arc, and 87.0% (20-23) from the free throw line. Five Mean Green players scored double digits, four of whom were starters -- Criner (16), Adams (15), Tac (15), Ellison (10), and Jones (14). North Texas (9-15 4-10) fell on the road to the Florida Atlantic Owls in Boca Raton, FL. The first quarter was the best for the Mean Green but they struggled from the second period onward never breaking out of the low teens for any other quarters. The second half was especially troublesome where the Mean Green were just 9 of 32 (28.1%) from the floor. Acheil Tac was the Player of the Game where she earned another double-double, making this her 9th of the season and third consecutive. The Mean Green (11-16 6-8) never trailed against the Florida Atlantic Owl in a Saturday night "Black Out". The starters did a good job however bench production continues to be a concern. Hot shooting, especially in the second half, helped propel North Texas to victory. A foul late in the game, which also led to Tony Benford earning a Technical Foul, could have been a game changer however the Owls never could capitalize on the potential momentum shift. The Player of the Game goes to Deckie Johnson, who again shot extremely well, accounting for two of the team's three 3-pointers.
