North Texas (12-20) fell to the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers at Legacy Arena in Birmingham, AL by a score of 84-76. Poor shooting in the first half doomed the Mean Green as they shot just 12 of 35 (34.3%) from the floor, three of 11 (27.3%) from behind the arc, and one of seven (14.3%) from the free throw line. North Texas also lost the rebounding battle 42-24.
Four Mean Green players managed to get into double digits in the game — Eric Katenda (22), Ja’Michael Brown (14), Deckie Johnson (12), and Carrington Ward (10). Katenda’s 22 points was also a career high for him in his final game in a Mean Green uniform.
The status of Tony Benford is currently unknown. Rick Villareal, Athletics Director for North Texas, declined to comment on the 54-73 (.425) Head Coach who just completed his fourth season. Since taking over the program, the best the Men’s Basketball program has managed was a 16-16 season in the 2013-2014 season. Tony Benford coached teams are also 1-4 in post-season play.
Game stats are available here.
I will be posting an outlook on the past season plus look into the future on how the 2016-2017 might look with a host of newcomers suiting up for the Mean Green next season some time next week.
