North Texas announced its 2017-2018 Women’s Basketball schedule today. It features 14 home and away games along with a two-game stretch in San Juan, Puerto Rico. North Texas will be looking improve upon their 2016-2017 record of 12-19 / 9-11 under now third year head coach Jalie Mitchell (23-38 0.377).
North Texas is returning 10 players, two of whom were regular starters – Tyara Warren and Terriell Bradley (leading scorer for 2016-17). Newcomers to the squad are Callie Owens, Brittany Smith, Deja Terrell, Trena Mims, and Lauren Holmes. Justis Szczepanski had to sit out the 2016-17 season and will be a welcome addition to the regular rotation at the Post position with Tosin Mabodu and Micayla Buckner.
This year the Conference USA Basketball Tournament is moving to Frisco, TX and will be played at the Ford Center at The Star from March 7th through the 10th.

Upon first glance, this looks like a solid schedule with some known teams in the out of conference slate — Tulsa, DFW rival SMU, Big 12 opponent Kansas State, and La Salle from the Atlantic 10.
When you dig further into this schedule, you see a few Wednesday/Friday and Friday/Sunday conference basketball games. Hopefully this is an experiment Conference USA is trying to see if this has a positive impact on attendance. I’m not a fan of this and hopefully we don’t see more of this in future seasons. Conference USA is also continuing to have most Men’s/Women’s games be played at the same time thus making it difficult to follow both sports at the same time.
There will be two doubleheaders with the Men’s team this season.
